Complexity Based Theories & Practices of Organisation Design & Leadership

As society and organisations come to the crest of the ICT Age and are facing the new order of “post peak reality” adaptation, change of every scale and conflicting new demands face the decision-makers of our time.

The complexity based models of Elliott Jaques and later Gillian Stamp has been used in Australia for almost half a century. These models have globally empowered and inspired leaders, CEO’s executives and consultants in creating “Requisite Organisations” that have stood the test of time.  Globally CEOs and even government leaders are still turning to them, now almost fifty years on.

Many Australian organisations have used the principles and methods to adapt, restructure and position their organisations through understanding the complexity of their context and the capability in their people.

There are many questions that need to be addressed.  Do these complexity based models of Jaques et al provide models and lens to understand and empower organisations of the future? Is being “requisite” (as required by nature) a management fad or something of great significance to all human endeavour.  How will new working relationships driven by technology impact authority & accountability, time and decision making?  What other models, developments and learning’s can add to, enhance or even negate these key discoveries?

New cultural memes are in conflict with old; challenging established business, economic, social, political and environmental models.  We are in a time of crises.

Because of the ongoing interest in these and related complexity based models and constructs we should consider creating an “institute”, forum or body in the Australasian region.  There are many diverse stakeholders using these models or their derivatives who may benefit from the formation of a umbrella institute.

One of the purposes of the institute will be to create a collective of experienced and knowledgeable practitioners, managerial leaders and contributors who are interested in furthering the application of the work, increasing understanding and research and developing new insights in the new orders which are being created.
